Defaults matter

Sometimes little thought is put into the decision on what to set as default option, sometimes however it can be a major factor contributing to a product's success.

Defaults matter, because changing them is oftentimes overlooked by users or not even considered to be relevant enough to do the work.

This is the reason why opting in and opting out of services can have wide reaching impact. Think of the "Sent from my iPhone" signature which was inspired by Hotmail's famous 1996 growth hack of setting the default email signature to

Even large bodies such as the EU consider this topics as essential, especially in the context of data privacy and processing of personal identifiable information (PII).
